SS Rajamouli's ‘RRR’, starring Jr NTR and Ram Charan, has earned a special mention as The Academy introduces a new Oscar category for Best Stunt Design.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that starting at the 100th Academy Awards in 2028, the award will honour outstanding stunt choreography in films released in 2027. The Academy shared the news on Instagram, saying, “Stunts have always been part of the magic of movies. Now, they’re part of the Oscars.”
The announcement was accompanied by a poster featuring ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, ‘RRR’, and ‘Mission Impossible’, with "Stunt Design Oscar" boldly displayed. The official ‘RRR’ Twitter account reacted, saying, "THE PROUDEST MOMENT FOR ALL OF US. So glad the world continues to celebrate #RRRMOVIE and its ACTION… Again and again and again."
In 2023, *RRR* made history by winning India’s first Oscar for Best Song with "Naatu Naatu," also earning a Golden Globe and Critics' Choice Award. The film, starring Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Shriya Saran, Alia Bhatt, and Ajay Devgn, received praise from Hollywood icons like Danny DeVito and the Russo Brothers.
The Academy has announced the creation of a Stunt Design Oscar, to be presented at the 100th Academy Awards in 2028 for films released in 2027. The initiative, led by director David Leitch, aims to honour the artistry behind stunt choreography. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang expressed their pride in recognising the innovative work of stunt professionals.
