As reported by Deadline, Disney has commissioned its first musical based on an Indian princess from ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ filmmaker Gurinder Chadha. The original report suggests that she will reunite and co-write with Paul Mayeda Berges. The project will focus on a “dynamic princess from Indian history”. However, plot specifics are being kept under wraps for the moment.

Chadha is a British-Indian film director and producer who founded Bend It Films after the success of ‘Bend It Like Beckham’, which she wrote, directed, and produced. She also directed the acclaimed West End musical adaptation of the popular film. Her other films include ‘Bride and Prejudice’, ‘Blinded by the Light’, ‘Viceroy’s House’, ‘The Mistress of Spices’, ‘Angus’, ‘Thongs and Perfect Snogging’, and ‘It’s a Wonderful Afterlife’.

She is also reportedly working on adapting Nidhi Chanani’s highly-acclaimed graphic novel ‘Pashmina’ into an original CG animated musical for Netflix.
