The In Memoriam section of the Oscars 2022 paid a tribute to artists and filmmakers of the global film industry who passed away last year. This year’s segment included stars like Sidney Poitier, Betty White, Ivan Reitman, and Stephen Sondheim among others. However, it failed to include Indian legends singer Lata Mangeshkar, and actor Dilip Kumar and their absence infuriated fans.

A fan wrote on Twitter, “The amazing world-record-setting #LataMangeshkar (who passed away from Covid) sang more songs for more movies than shown in all Oscars combined. Yet, the #Oscars2022 #Inmemoriam did not see it fit to honor her even with a mention. Sometimes, I think, colonialism still lives on…”

Lata Mangeshkar passed away on February 6 at the age of 92. She was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour in 2001, and was the recipient of three National Film Awards among many other honours. Veteran actor Dilip Kumar passed away on July 7 last year at the age of 98 after a prolonged illness.

In the previous years, the Oscars had featured late actors Irrfan Khan, Sushant Singh Rajput, and Rishi Kapoor in its In Memoriam section.
