The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited 487 artists and executives worldwide to join its ranks. Among them are Indian luminaries such as veteran actor Shabana Azmi, filmmaker SS Rajamouli, his costume designer wife Rama Rajamouli, "Naatu Naatu" choreographer Prem Rakshith, and producer Ritesh Sidhwani.

The Academy announced its new members on its website, emphasising that selections were based on professional qualifications and a commitment to representation, inclusion, and equity. Among the 487 invitees this year are 71 Oscar nominees, including 19 winners.

Shabana Azmi, a five-time National Award-winning artist, was invited to the Actors branch. SS Rajamouli and Rama Rajamouli, fueled by the Oscar buzz of "RRR," received invitations to the Directors and Costume Designers branches, respectively. The film's Best Original Song winner, "Naatu Naatu," also brought an invitation for its choreographer, Prem Rakshit, to join the Production and Technology branch.

"We are thrilled to welcome this year's class of new members to the Academy," said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang. "These remarkably talented artists and professionals from around the world have made a significant impact on our filmmaking community."

The Academy noted that the 2024 class comprises 44% women, 41% from underrepresented ethnic/racial communities, and 56% from 56 countries and territories outside the US.
