A statue of Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol will be unveiled in London’s Leicester Square later this year to mark 30 years of ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, the longest-running film in Indian cinema.
The statue will join others of Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, Batman and more on Leicester Square’s ‘Scenes in the Square’ trail.
Mark Williams of the Heart of London Business Alliance called it “fantastic” to add these “titans of international cinema,” noting it's the first film featuring Leicester Square itself to be honoured on the trail.
Often dubbed the Romeo and Juliet of Bollywood, the film follows Raj and Simran’s love story from a train departing King’s Cross to the landscapes of Europe and India.
Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, said the statue celebrates “the global appeal of Indian cinema” and its power to “build bridges between communities through storytelling.”
The Scenes in the Square trail is run by the Heart of London Business Alliance with support from Westminster City Council.
