Obituary

Jayalaxmi Chande née Madhvani, known amongst her friends as Jayli, was born in Jinja, Uganda.    

 

She had her primary and secondary education in Uganda and later accompanied her parents on their travels to Europe and the USA.  

 

In 1955, she married Jayantilal Keshavji Chande of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. They have three sons and three grandchildren.

 

Jayli was  an  active social worker and took interest in many welfare institutions. A former member of the Ladies’ Circle, and of Inner Wheel she was a past Chairperson of the Kisutu Branch of Umoja wa Wanawake wa Tanzania (Women’s Association of Tanzania) and  served for ten years as a member of the National Film Censorship Board.  She was also on the Council of Tanzania Girl Guides Association for seven years. She was a former member of the International Women’s Association, Women’s Corona Society and of Dar es Salaam Hospital Support Group.  

 

Jayli was the longest serving Trustee of Hindu Mahila Mandal where she spearheaded the development of the Mandal’s new building constructed in partnership with Bochasanwasi Shree Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS).

 

For the past 60 years, she was always by the side of her husband and has meaningfully supported and helped him in all his community welfare and other activities.
