The University of Leicester has appointed entrepreneur, scientist and philanthropist Dr Nik Kotecha OBE DL as its new Pro-Chancellor (Enterprise), a newly created honorary role aimed at strengthening the institution's links with business, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Dr Kotecha will take up the position on 1 September 2026, serving as an ambassador for the University while helping to advance its enterprise and innovation agenda. The appointment comes as universities increasingly seek to play a greater role in driving economic growth, commercialising research and supporting regional prosperity.
Dr Kotecha's own journey reflects the transformative potential of enterprise. Arriving in Leicester as a refugee, he founded Morningside Pharmaceuticals Ltd from his home garage in 1991. Under his leadership, the company grew into a global pharmaceutical supplier serving more than 120 countries. He was awarded an OBE in recognition of his services to entrepreneurship, innovation and philanthropy.
He is also the Founder and Chairman of RandalSun Capital and holds several national, regional and civic leadership roles across business and innovation.
A longstanding supporter of the University of Leicester, Dr Kotecha was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science in 2023. Through the Randal Foundation, which he co-founded with his wife Moni, he has supported several initiatives, including the establishment of Leicester Medical School and the IntoUniversity Centre in Beaumont Leys.
Speaking about his appointment, Dr Kotecha said he was "delighted" to take on the role, describing the University as a key part of Leicester's identity.
"I have seen first-hand the extraordinary contribution it makes—not only as a nationally recognised centre of academic excellence, but also as a driving force in the civic, economic and innovation landscape of our city and country," he said.
He added that he looked forward to strengthening the University's connections with business, industry and the wider community while helping translate world-class research into real-world impact.
Professor Nishan Canagarajah, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester, welcomed the appointment, saying universities have a crucial role in fostering innovation and economic growth.
"Nik brings exceptional experience and insight from across business, enterprise and innovation, and will be a strong advocate for the University as we continue to develop our research and enterprise ambitions," he said.
The appointment forms part of the University's wider Pro-Chancellor programme, which brings experienced figures from business, philanthropy and community leadership into ambassadorial roles supporting its strategic priorities.
