Built without steel
One of the most striking aspects of traditional BAPS stone mandirs is their use of stone as the principal structural material. In traditional construction, the stones are shaped and positioned so that their weight is transferred systematically through pillars, beams, walls, arches and other structural elements.
Rather than depending on steel reinforcement embedded within the stonework, the architecture uses load-bearing stone construction and interlocking components. Individual blocks are precisely cut so that adjoining pieces work together, with gravity and compression contributing to the stability of the structure.
This places extraordinary demands on design and craftsmanship. The dimensions of each component, its position within the structure and the forces acting upon it must be considered before construction begins.
Modern engineering can complement this traditional approach. Computer-aided modelling, structural analysis and contemporary surveying techniques can be used to understand loads, stresses and environmental conditions while allowing the visible architecture to retain traditional forms.
A geometry of the sacred
The design of a mandir is not simply a matter of making a building ornate.
Traditional Hindu architecture places considerable importance on geometry, proportion and orientation. The mandir is planned according to a structured spatial hierarchy, with the sacred inner areas occupying a central position.
The garbhagriha, or sanctum, is the spiritual heart of the mandir. Around it, architectural elements rise progressively outward and upward, creating a carefully ordered relationship between the sacred centre and the surrounding spaces.
The most recognisable feature is the shikhar, the soaring tower above the sanctum. Multiple shikhars may form a composition across a shikharbaddha mandir, accompanied by domes, mandapams, balconies and other architectural elements.
The verticality is significant both visually and architecturally. As the eye moves upwards from the base, layers of carving and increasingly intricate forms culminate in the shikhar, creating a visual movement from the earthly towards the divine.
From quarry to carving
The making of a mandir begins long before the first stone is placed on site.
Stone is selected according to its qualities, including strength, durability, grain, colour and suitability for carving. Large quantities may then be transported to workshops where artisans transform raw blocks into architectural components.
A single stone can pass through several stages: rough cutting, shaping, detailed carving and finishing before reaching the mandir. This is where the shilpi, or traditional craftsman, becomes central to the process.
Pillars, brackets, ceilings and façades are covered with an extraordinary vocabulary of motifs: lotus flowers, vines, geometric patterns, animals, musicians, dancers and figures drawn from Hindu traditions. Some surfaces are deliberately left relatively restrained, allowing highly ornamented areas to create rhythm and contrast.
The carving is not applied to the building as an afterthought. It is integrated into the architecture itself.
The mathematics beneath the beauty
The visual intricacy of a mandir can sometimes obscure the engineering discipline behind it.
A traditional stone structure must account for dead loads, live loads, wind forces, seismic conditions and the transfer of forces through its various components. Pillars must support beams; beams transfer loads towards supporting elements; foundations distribute those forces into the ground.
At the same time, the design has to accommodate thousands of individually carved pieces while maintaining precise alignment. This is particularly challenging when traditional architectural forms are constructed at monumental scale.
In modern BAPS mandir projects, traditional craftsmanship therefore exists alongside contemporary engineering, project management and construction technology. Digital drawings and modelling can help translate traditional architectural principles into precise construction plans, while modern equipment assists with surveying, lifting and assembly.
The technology may have changed, but the architectural language remains recognisably rooted in Indian tradition.
A living architectural tradition
Perhaps the greatest achievement of these mandirs is that they do not preserve traditional architecture merely as a museum piece.
They make it living architecture.

For millions of people who may never have studied the Shilpa or Sthapatya Shastras, the mandir becomes an introduction to them; not through a textbook, but through stone, geometry, sculpture and space.
The result is an unusual architectural conversation across time: ancient principles interpreted through modern engineering, traditional craftsmanship carried across continents, and Indian architectural heritage given a physical presence in some of the world's most diverse cities.
The mandirs stand as reminders that architectural innovation does not always mean abandoning the past. Sometimes, it means understanding it deeply enough to build it anew.
Rising from the sands of Abu Dhabi, the BAPS Hindu Mandir is more than an architectural landmark. It is also a significant symbol of the presence of Hindu worship and Indian cultural heritage in the United Arab Emirates, a Muslim-majority country.
Inaugurated in 2024, the mandir was built in the traditional nagara style of Hindu temple architecture, combining intricately carved Indian stonework with modern engineering. Seven shikhars represent the UAE’s seven emirates, while the structure incorporates marble from Rajasthan and stone from India.
Thousands of artisans contributed to its carvings, which depict Hindu deities, stories and philosophical teachings alongside motifs reflecting the cultures of the UAE. Its location gives the architecture an added cultural dimension. A traditional Hindu mandir stands in Abu Dhabi not as an isolated monument, but within a society where people of different faiths and nationalities live and work.
Its creation reflects the UAE’s stated emphasis on religious tolerance and coexistence, while providing Hindu devotees with a dedicated place of worship.
A marble marvel in America
In Robbinsville, New Jersey, an extraordinary piece of India’s architectural heritage rises amid the American landscape. The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, inaugurated in 2014, was built according to principles of traditional Hindu temple architecture and has become both a place of worship and a cultural landmark.
Built in the Nagara style, the mandir stands 42 feet high and 133 feet long, with its 12,000-square-foot structure crafted entirely from Italian Carrara marble. The marble was quarried in Europe, transported to India, where artisans hand-carved the individual pieces, and then shipped to New Jersey for assembly. Its intricate carvings include 98 pillars depicting the lives and teachings of spiritual aspirants and devotees.
Yet its significance extends beyond its architecture. The mandir serves as a centre for worship, cultural learning and community service, helping preserve Indian arts, language, music and traditions for generations of Indian Americans while introducing visitors from across America to Hindu heritage.
Standing in Neasden, north-west London, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is a striking expression of traditional Indian architecture in the heart of Britain. Inaugurated in 1995, the mandir was built using traditional Hindu architectural principles, bringing centuries-old craftsmanship into a modern London setting.
The complex is distinguished by its intricate stonework, soaring shikhars, domes, ornate pillars and finely carved motifs. Constructed from Bulgarian limestone and Italian Carrara marble, the stone was carved by artisans in India before being transported to Britain and assembled into the temple. The result is an intricate architectural composition in which structure and sculpture become one.
Yet the mandir's significance extends beyond its appearance. It has become an important centre for Hindu worship, culture, education and community life in Britain. Alongside daily prayers and religious festivals, it welcomes visitors from different faiths and backgrounds, offering an insight into Hindu traditions and Indian heritage.
